The Luck Factor

Luck and being fortunate to have good luck in life is important. One always wonders why some people are luckier than others. What is the exact nature of luck? There are fascinating stories and numerous books published that link luck to everything from personality to the occult. We all want to win friends and influence people, maybe even hypnotize ourselves, look fabulous and have inner peace.

Max Gunther’s The Luck Factor is the classic book about luck that was written back in the seventies. The Luck Factor talks about luck and the theories of luck from paganism, to mathematics to magic. He draws some conclusions about luck and the possibility of managing it to harness good luck in ones favor. Gunther links good luck to social networking, going with gut feelings, taking risks, and blind faith much more so than to superstition or magic spells. Gunther claims you can adjust luck to your favor by making life changes.

The book talks about people who were semi clairvoyant when it came to things like just knowing they would win the lottery. Others have notable bad luck streaks that just seem to continue throughout their entire lives. Some people believe that luck gets channeled into unselfish people and that the greedier the person the less lucky they are likely to be. The book talks about some of the techniques that you can use to manage your own luck. The book touches upon the following pointers for becoming luckier.

Creating personal channels along which good luck can easily flow. This idea reminds me of the saying it’s not what you know but who you know.

Have a good instinctive hunch and belief that there is more than meets the eye. This may well mean believing in what you do and persevering at it.

Live life in a zig-zaging manner more than in a straight line. For example, think Steve Jobs, athletes, or movie stars for that matter who never went to college or necessarily followed the main stream.

Know how to ratchet away from bad luck to avert it from getting even worse. You have to have a certain amount of finesse to work yourself away from bad situations or else be equipped to handle them properly.

Don’t always be happy go lucky, instead have a reasonable dose of survivalist pessimism. The idea is that it pays to have a care in the world.

If you are interested in what makes a person lucky this book is a good read as it takes an open minded approach to the question of luck. The book has the expected conclusions, such as that lucky people have more opportunities by virtue of their personalities, but it certainly isn’t afraid to talk about what other common factors lucky people share. Whether this book turns your luck in life around or not, it is definitely an interesting read. I hope you get lucky!
